Somebody that I used to know

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and I feel so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Like most songs - or any creative work, for that matter, "Somebody that I used to know" was written by Gotye based on his own experience, on relationships he's had in the past.  The official music video brings the message of the song to life about someone who had once been so special just fading into the background.

On the other hand, the video cover by Walk Off the Earth was just, well, cool.

Lemon Drop Cookies!

I got this recipe from the cookie issue of Taste of Home back in December. Lemon squares in cookie form.  Sweet, refreshing, and the perfect end to any meal.  Yum!

Lemon Drop Cookies
Yield: About 3.5 dozen
1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 Tbsp. half-and-half
1 tsp. grated lemon peel
1 & 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup finely crushed lemon drops (I used a food processor to crush the lemon drops)
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt

1. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.  Beat in the egg, cream and peel.
2. Combine the flour, lemon drops, baking powder, and salt.  Gradually add to the creamed mixture and mix well. (One tip: Make sure to use the lemon drops as soon as possible because they tend to clump together and harden)
3. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls 3 in. apart onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. (I kept the batch I made for about 12 minutes, and the cookies were still softer than I expected.) Cool for 2 minutes before removing to wire racks.

The cookies are nice and chewy, especially when warm.

Ribbons and things

I love ribbons. If I could, I'd have spools of all colors with its own little library in my dream craft room - or a nook would be fine too, just like these:

For now, all I have are random spools that I keep in a box.

Ribbons were my inspiration for my craft time with my younger sister-in-law.  I made a "gift card."

Who shall I give this to?

New role models

Since switching from cable to hulu, I've had to deal with mandatory ad-watching for at least 60 seconds (longer for the more popular shows).  Most of the commercials are a pain.  But then there are gems like this one:

Simple. Strong.

Kicking bundt!

I was going through my posts and found this unpublished one.  It had photos from one of our date nights last year.  He made the entree (beef brisket and mashed parsnips) and drinks (raspberry vodka), and I made dessert (a naked cream cheese bundt cake).

Good times.

Seasons changing -- TV shows, that is

It's been a couple months since my last post but work, wedding planning and frankly, laziness, have kept me away.

Now I'm back, driven by couch potato-ism and a short opportunity for quiet.

Let me start with Gossip Girl.  In the battle between Best friend VS Soulmate, it seems soulmate is destined to win.  As much as I admire Dan's love for Blair, there is no denying that Chuck is the one for her.  And in this season's finale, it looks like Blair is finally ready to fight for true love.

Blair: You said I always bet against you?
Well this time, I'm all in.

Smash is a show I was initially skeptical about but fell in love with at first viewing.  The finale - though leaving enough cliffhangers for an exciting second season - ends on a high note with Karen proving everyone wrong and showing the world that she is indeed a star.

It may not be the official finale yet, but the last two-episode special of Glee seemed like the best ending to the season -- or the show, for that matter:  They win the Nationals; Rachel is back on track towards her Broadway dream; Puck gets a another chance to graduate; Will wins the Teacher of the Year Award; and the New Direction kids have finally become accepted in McKinley High.  All is right in their world.

I have no idea how the real finale will be able to top that.

I can't wait for next fall!
